DEEP COUNTRY LODGE

PROFESSIONAL GUIDES

Our professional hunting guides are long time resident hunters who have decades of guiding and hunting experience. Our guides are native Newfoundlander's who grew up hunting and fishing as a way of life. They know the rugged country and how to navigate it to find the Moose, Black Bear and Woodland Caribou as they are hunting grounds where their fathers and grandfathers hunted and trapped for the past century.

All of our guides come highly recommended and will do their very best to help you take a trophy animal and make your hunting experience with us one to remember for years to come.

All our professional guides have emergency first aid training that is updated regularly and carry handheld GPS devices to help them navigate the terrain while out in the field.

A Guide's Story

In His Own Words...

As I watch the sun fade away for the last time over the tolt and the sky sets afire. I can’t help but be thankful to god and all those before me that connects me to this land. To hunt the land that was only heard tell of in their stories. I walk back the caribou trails carved out into the land over hundreds of years, as this land is carved into me. The rocks, though, unforgiving a beauty in its own, etched out by glaciers as these days spent in the land of my forefathers are etched into my mind.

As they made a living on this very piece of land, how amazing is it to think that Pop Cy, Pop smith and Uncle Cal may of been the last people to walk the land in which I now guide. Guiding – what a way to make a living! God knows it ain’t easy; late nights and early mornings. But when you get out on one of those perfect mornings with frost and not a breath of wind, to walk the land to hear the partridge cackle, the sound of a lone cow calling in the distance there is nowhere else I long to be.

For I miss my family and important events for a few months of the year. These are the sacrifices in which we have to make in order for them to have the comforts they enjoy. They don’t understand why I do it nor do they have to, it’s bread into us as guides – the masters of nature, tough and as fearless as our quarry. For It courses through our veins, the rush of the monster plowing the trees before you coming to your call; it is a drug like no other. Who else in the world can use their voice to outsmart the oldest and elusive beasts and make so many peoples dreams come true. The people we meet and their story’s of hunting the places of the world are also incredible.

I must return home now to my family that I miss so dear. When I am home my mind will occasionally drift to this land and wander freely as the Caribou that roam this land, again feel the bitter wind on my face and be free of all life’s stresses. Until the leaves turn again and the wind switches to the Northern. This place, this land is forever on my mind and forever in my soul.
